Starting in 1955 TF trucks the water pump was totally redesigned. One big
(about 4" hole) with visible impeller fit directly into the block, which had
a 4" hole. Before that there was a back cover on the pump with 2 smaller
holes, about 1-1/2 " diameter each. the short shaft pump is the later type
with a different pulley and hub. the common problem is that you have to
match the diameter of harmonic balancer sheave with the water pump sheave
diameter. The TF harmonic balancers are bigger in diam. than earlier ones,
so they spin the belt faster. If you press the oldhub and pulley on the pump
will run too fast and scream. I've found the proper sizing available from
Patricks.

PS on drilling thru paint, I also use tape, but don't know if it really
helps. Use extra light pressure on the drill so it does not punch out a cone
near the end.
Also, I didn't get any replies on how many fender screws are visible on a 46
half ton from inside the box. Fender has fewer holes than box side.

I have seen the shortened shaft water pumps for sale, and I have read web
pages where people have shortened the shafts themselves. Is the water pump
for the 53 - 54 235 the same as these shortened bumps ? Can you just buy one
of these or is there a difference in the pulleys or the alignment ?
