Kind of depends on how you drive it...I broke the ring and pinion on a '58
or '59 GMC 10 bolt with my BBC ('70 LS5 block, TH400 combo) and upgrade to a
8.5 inch 10 bolt, and sheared the spider gears. I then went to a 12 bolt and
never destroyed it...all ratios were 3.08 and in the days of bias ply
tires...I'd expect that radials would grab better and put a little more
strain on the rear.
I'd suggest the 12 bolt, or have a 9inch with axles drilled/made to match
your front's....the initial cost may be a bit higher, the work involved in
installing either is the same as a 10bolt, and the longevtity may payoff.
Oh, I did all my "breaking" of the rears when I was 16-19 years
old....funny though, haven't broke much since ;)
