It will take the big chunks out, and aftermarket suppliers used to
sell a kit for doing this. If you look at modern toilet paper in
the sun and bang it a little on the wall you will see a cloud of
dust come off it. This is powder, probably very fine silica or limestone,
that is put on it to make it smell good, absorb water, and a few
other things.
There was a thread a few years ago on this that should be in the
archives.
New honest to God oil filters usually run around $3.00 in places
like Wal Mart or your local discount store. If you have a rare one,
it may cost you a little more at a FLAPS. Still not the place to
save significant dollars. Most people use only one or two a year
on a classic.
In short, not in MY engine.
