Bill, The oil pump is probably in the way of getting the cam out. While it's better to keep push rods in order, as they seat to their particular lifter and rocker, it doesn't matter that much. More important to adjust them with some "breathing room" so you don't keep valves from closing all the way which bends push rods and burns valves.
