Well said Bob. I might add that LA just had its 2nd year in a row without
any smog alerts. 20 years ago we were getting 75 - 100 Stage 1 - 3 alerts
a year. I remember collapsing during little league practice one day because
the air was so bad.

OK, here I go on my environmental soap box again. But read on, this is
really serious stuff that affects all of us and our children.
This may sound a bit trite coming as it is from someone who works for the
dread federal government, but the part of the govt that I work for and the
part implicated in the message below are two different animals. In my job
as an ecologist I do see LOTS of evidence that we are crapping all over our
home. This is especially obvious in southern Louisiana where pollution
seems to be a way of life for many people (from big business chemical and
oil companies to the individual dumping his old refrigerator into the
bayou). Did you ever wonder why there are so many odd diseases prevalent
today? Take endometriosis in young women for example. It is the abnormal
growing of endometrial (uterine) tissue outside of the uterus. Does the
prevalence of growth hormones in many of the products we eat seem like a
logical explanation, or perhaps the enormous number of estrogen imitators
that we spew into the air and water? Human male sperm counts have
decreased by 50% in the last 35 years. What does that mean for the future.
Even remote areas like Baffin Island in extreme NE Canada where there is NO
industry have lots of pollution because this stuff moves around in the air.

You cannot tell me that when you go to Houston, LA or Salt Lake City (and
many other big cities) that you enjoy breathing the gunk they call air. A
very large part of that gunk comes from the good old internal combustion
engine. The CAFE standards were set to help reduce the pollution
associated with cars and trucks. Auto makers said that they would be put
out of business if they had to adhere to the new standards. The first
companies to meet the standards actually got a real boost in sales rather
than going bankrupt.
I love these old trucks and would love mine even more if it ran. But, I
could still drive it with some other type of motor and I would be most
happy to do so if it would reduce pollution. There is absolutely no
incentive for companies to reduce pollution on their own (unless a very
large proportion of the population demands it - which ain't happening yet).
This leaves only the government to realize that there is a problem (taking
a look at the big picture rather than just the profit margin) and demand
that something be done. It might hurt a little here and there but my
children and grandchildren are worth it.

Cafe is the "corporate average fuel economy". This is
the standard that an auto manufacturer is suppose to
meet with the fuel economy of their entire fleet. But
they can buy credits and there are other ways they get
around things. This is one thing that keeps the price
of cars and trucks going up. It will also eventually
eliminate the combustion engine as we know it. Thanks
Government.
