Thanks for the information Jim. I've read the manual's
overhaul procedure and it sounds a little bit much for
a first-timer who depends on his truck as a daily driver.
Because the steering box currently works OK, I think I may
just fill it up with the proper lube and see if the slight
leak around the pitman arm shaft will slow down some.

Hi...
If you do take the cover off, as Jon explained, you
will have to make or find a gasket for the
cover...and you'll probably be wasting your time in
the long run, because the bushings are usually worn
out in these boxes, and they need to be replaced.
So, you ought to go ahead and pull out the whole
thing and overhaul it, replacing the bushings as a
minimum (usually that's all they really need, but
some are in bad shape from lack of lube, and need to
be replaced with a rebuilt good used box).
You will want to go thru the adjustments if you do
pull off the side cover...read the factory shop
manual, if you don't have one, please buy it, you'll
be glad you did! The manual has info on how to
measure the bearing preload and how to set the over
center torque. I bought a cheap fish scale at
WalMart to measure the pounds pull it takes to turn
the steering wheel...it does the job ok.
