Subject: [oletrucks] Tie rod and drag link ball replacement
Can someone tell me what the recommended procedure is for the removal of
original equipment forged on or peened tie rod and drag link balls? It is my
understanding that the bottom visible diameter is larger than the shaft that
comes through the member. This would indicate the need for drilling, milling,
or some operation to remove the larger diameter portion prior to removal. I
don't know if the material in these parts is tempered, casehardened, or what.

I've gotta '51 AD with a '59 235 abuilding for it. Patrick's short shaft
water pump and pulley will be used, and the radiator is original, for now. I
understand that the 235 fan can be used with minor mods, but I just got to
thinking that a modern aftermarket flex fan may pay dividends in power and
mileage. Has anybody tried this, and if so, what fan did you use?

Hello again,
Is there anyone of us out there that is a carburetor specialist?
Is there anyone out there that has any Rochester 2G carburetors?
More specifically, the ones I'm looking for have a 1-3/8 "(1.375")
bore. I'm also looking for another one that has a bore of 1.408" (i
think). These came on buses, travelalls and suburbans as well as
some larger trucks.. I'm not sure what years these were produced
but I think it was around 1959 -60??? What is a travelall? Anyone out
there got any of these things? I want to put one on a hopped up
inline and need the bigger bore to get the proper flow caracteristics
for this big engine. I may have to send it out to a carburetor
specialist for venturi and jet reworking. I hear they can do a
number of things to get better performance and can even trick it into
thinking the flow is different than what it is. I'm not too up on
this carburetor jargon but got into a discussion with a carburetor
technician and he had the right spiel to get me thinking I might
want to do something with the carb... Let me know if you know
anything.

Hi Jon. Sorry, I forgot to post my name at the end of the reply. My kids
keep
changing my name in the Netscape preferences, hence the Swinging Alligator,
Seymour Bunz, and Now Max Power. Gotta love 'em!
Yes I did rebuild it myself. But I have access to the dial indicators and
stuff
to line it up for the correct backlash, etc. Unfortunately, I have not been
able to drive this rear end yet, so the jury is out on how well my
installation
was performed! But it is a bit tricky, and can involve assembly and
disassembly
a number of times to get the shims correct. If you have any fears of not
doing
it correctly, it might pay to have a qualified mechanic handle it. Maybe Jim
could give some more experienced advice as to whether this should be
undertaken
by the average shadetree mechanic. I'm surely not above average, so I guess
I
will cross my fingers and hope the rebuild works OK.
I did pick up a nice driveshaft yesterday at the bone yard, from and 80's
Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser station wagon, along with a tilt column out of a
1977
Camaro, $35 for the pair. I came home with a big grin. My wife still gets
amused that the highlight of my day is crawling around on the mud in the
drizzling rain salvaging truck parts.

Paul,
I guess a flex fan would work, but the ones I tried had too deep a pitch and
hit the double groove pulley. A little trimming would probably fix this, but
I just didn't like the idea of those thin, sharp blades down in that space
where all dropped nuts and bolts always end up (the black hole of the core
support). I could see bloody fingers and forearms, even before getting the
thing out of the box.
I used a rigid 6-blade aluminum fan, don't remember the brand, but it was an
aftermarket parts store piece. You see them with colored anodized blades.
It's worked out fine, is quieter than the original, and cools better too.
