I ran the same engine combination in my 1950 truck all through college and
never had a problem once I added the electric fan. I was able to run a
flex a lite engine driven fan on a short water pump too.
Your going to want to install a high flow thermostat to help increase the
water flow.
You will need a transmission cooler no matter if your towing or not. The
trick is to not place the cooler in front of the radiator as that just
transfers more heat into the already taxed cooling system. I had a B&M
transmission cooler mounted under the fender along the frame.
An electric fan would be a wise choice when dealing with the stock
radiator..........that's what I ended up running to cure my at idle heating
problem. I mounted a pusher model on the grille side of the radiator up
toward the top of the radiator that just clears the support X-braces in
front of the radiator. The fans work best when mounted high. You can
either run the fan to operate with only a toggle that you activate or with a
sensor mounted into the head or intake that will turn the fan on at a
pre-set temperature. I wired mine to operate either way with a toggle and
relay.
