In answer to your question in part the plate with the 3 screws in it is an
oil pressure regulator. Behind the plate is a gasket, another plate with
the spring loaded regulator in it then a second gasket. I have changed this
out on my engine and had bought the new regulator plate and both of the
gaskets from Chevs of the 40's out of Washington State. The cost was
minimal however I did notice a change for the better in the oil pressure on
the gauge as well as also solved a minor leak problem. Don't worry about
taking it apart as nothing will fly out at you and it is pretty self
explanatory to put back together. Hope this helps
