Subject: RE: [oletrucks] Self cancelling signal lights
Looked in my Canadian 58-9 Chevy/GMC parts manual and
my US 55-60 GMC parts manual. Both listed part numbers
only for "kits" consisting of the housing, lever, cancel
mechanism and switch. Unfortunately neither broke down
the kits into their component part numbers. So I pulled
the steering wheel on my 57 GMC and check that the part
numbers on it match up with the numbers on the turn
signal assembly I bought at the Conroe TX swap meet
three weeks ago. Same numbers (switch = 5944126,
cancel mechanism = 5948512, housing = 5945078 but
I can't be sure about the last digit, it could be
a 3 or a 6) however the switch on the one I just
bought had only 3 wires on it (although it had 3
unused terminals) instead of 6 wires as are used on
my truck. Back to the books.
The electrical diagram for a 57 GMC (no particular
model) shows optional "CLASS A" and "CLASS B" turn
signals, so turn signals were not standard on at
least some models. Class A shows a 3 wire switch using
the same color codes as my recent purchase. Class B
shows 6 wires that match the colors on my 57. I'm
guessing here, but I'd bet Billy Gibson's life that
the Class A turn signals are the bolt onto the top
of the fender type (only need 3 wires on the switch
because the brake lights are not part of the system),
while Class B use the dual filament bulbs in the
grill and tail lights.
Meanwhile, back in the Canadian 58-9 Parts manual...
The drawings for the turn signal kits show both the
big, ugly, non-automatic-canceling, bolt to the
side of the steering column turn signal switches as
well as the automatic canceling type that mounts
just under the steering wheel.
Anyway, I bought the one at the swap meet ($20)
because the one on my truck was hard to make
stay on when you wanted to make a right turn.
Once I had the new one home to look at and the
steering wheel removed from my truck, I found
it easier to just remove my old cancel mechanism
and touch it up with a file to make it work like
new than it would have been to change it out for
the "new" one.
So, if you want to pay $20US + shipping you can
have the "new" one. It is in real good mechanical
shape. The switch would either need to be replaced
or have 3 more wires soldered to it for Class B use.
The cup is painted a dark gray and the paint is
chipped in a few places. The handle has a Chevy
knob (black).

What exactly am I looking for to confirm if I have cancelling signal lights
but they are U/S?

Blaine,
I don't when they were introduced, but my 58 GMC has original ones on it.
