The side mount arrangement probably is stronger if you plan on drag racing.
For normal or even "fun" street use I think the original mounts work fine. IMHO
I
would drill the holes in the plate.
You can modify the pump but it's advisable to run the right size pulley on
the
pump. I've heard people say they have found them at salvage yards.
