[oletrucks] Rear-end Conversion - 1977 Monte Carlo?

At a recent old truck show I met a guy who had bought a restored/modified 56 
Chevy truck.  He said he thought the rear end was taken from a 1977 Monte 
Carlo and it was the perfect width.  

In all the time I've been a member of the list 've never heard anyone else 
mention that this ('77 Monte Carlo) was a conversion that would work.

Anybody know anything about this?
