Gene: I went the "thrifty" route and got a Craftsman at Sears. It cost about $300 and another 80 or so for the gas. For sheet metal and the like, it's great. Mine is just for occasional use and it has worked out fine. There are lots of better welders though, which I would recommend if you are going to use it a lot.
