Smokey,
As mentioned before, make sure the timing is not too advanced, a few
degrees will make a difference, I'd also add a heat sheild to the starter,
and make sure the POS and NEG cables are clean and shiny where they contact
everything as well as the lugs. Make sure the cables have no corrosion in
them too.
BTW, those higher torque starters are the way to go.
