Has only 1 connection for wire. The "frame" of the
switch makes the other connection, to ground. For a
dome light switch, one side of the lamp is connected
to +12VDC. The other side is connected to the switch
which connects to ground when the door is opened.
Cheaper than running 2 wires to the switch. Especially
when you are making hundreds of thousands of cars.

I'm confused. What does a "ground" switch do, if not take 12 volts to
ground, that a 12 volt switch would be any different. Is this what you are
referring to as the normally open or normally closed state of the switch
when in resting state?
