One thing I forgot to mention is another job of the shock is to keep the tire
firmly planted on the road surface. If the shock valving is wrong, the ride and
safety will never be good. A shock on a typical vehicle should be stiff in
compression and soft on extension. This way, the weight of the sprung portion
of the front end will drop down with gravity giving more likelthood of constant
contact with the road and when the suspension is compressed, you don't want the
suspension bottoming out and that is where you need a shock dampening to soak
up that stored energy.
