I have a 58 chev napco suburban. The pass side rear spring pin
(shackle through spring hangar pin) was sheared off clean.
Yesterday, I finally got under that ole girl and removed the shackle
to access the sheared pin in the spring hangar. I found that the
actual spring bolt (shackle though the spring) is threaded into a
brass bushing. I have already bought the replacement part for the
spring hangar pin which included a brass bushing, pin with
threaded ends/nuts and grease fitting from Carters.
Here's the question, I have not removed the actual sheared pin from
the hangar because I think it needs a torch on it to loosen it up.
But, if it is the same as the actual spring bolt - threaded - then the
new parts I have are different. Does anyone know if the spring
hangar pin should be threaded? And if so, is this part from Jim
Carters incorrect or a "modern" replacement? It is a smooth pin
that just slides into the brass bushing - only threaded on the ends
to attach the nuts. The original piece is both threaded on the ends
as well as coarse threads on the body that screw into the bushing.
Further, the threaded ends of the new spring pin do not fit in the
original shackle holes - the hole is too small.
I grilled Carters about these parts before I bought them but without
having the parts taken out - I trusted them to know what I was
talking about. I wanted to have the parts ready for immediate
replacement and get back on the road.
I can take photos of both the old parts and new parts if anyone
needs to visualize this better.
Thanks fellas.
