Sounds to me like the inner cable is a little long.

Subject: [oletrucks] speedometer/'53
From: W P. Fricke
I just replaced a chewed up drive gear to get my speedo and odo working
again, which it did...for a while. Everything worked like a charm but after
about 10 miles the needle got a little jumpy. Now the speedometer doesn't
work at all but the odometer does. This I don't understand.
Once the drive gear was replaced, I found it a little difficult to thread
both ends of the cable. At first I attached the cable to the drive gear but
couldn't get a thread started at the other end. So I reversed my efforts,
first threading the guage end. Same thing in reverse, I couldn't thread the
drive gear end. I ended up just getting a start at each end and tightened
up each once I got a start on them. Is this an indication I have either the
wrong cable or wrong speedo guage?
