the best way is with steam. i have welded on a gas tank after a steam
clean. how's that for clean! actually you can do a good job by adding 2 or
3 handful of pea gravel and a quart of Zep brand calcium lime and
rust/stain remover. Its in the commercial cleaning isle at Home Depot then
get a friend to help you rock the tank around to swish the gravel and the
rust remover around. This stuff is for bathroom use but derusts brackets,
bolts, nuts. It is some work, but this stuff really works and its about 5
or 6 bucks for a gallon and it can be cut several times. Don't dump the
stuff out when done, put it in a 5 gallon bucket and save it for other
stuff that has to soak to get the rust off.
