Paul was wondering about when he ought to think about putting disks on
his 52 Jimmy...
I know that you can safely drive a 50s truck at highway speeds (60-75
mph) with stock drum brakes, with a big block for power...I've been
doing it for over 20 years (well over 100k miles). You just need to
make sure the brakes are in good condition, and drive like it's an old
truck, instead of a late model car. That means, be carefull! Look
ahead, leave room in front of you, etc.
But, if you think you really would rather have disks, then this is the
time to do it...you can change to a car rearend and 5 lug front disks at
the same time.
I'd suggest a gear ratio in the low to mid 3s, ie 3.08 to 3.42
