Brad:
Try taking the top off your shifter box and see if you can see what
happens in there when it gets stuck. I suspect the problem is in
the box and not your tranny. There is a piece of metal that
engages a forward cog on 2nd and the rear cog in 1st and I
suspect that it is out of alignment and can't get into the forward
cog. You can realign by losening the shift rods from the box and
line it back up. In neutral, everything should be perfectly
symmetical when viewed from above (check this in the shop
manual if you haven't already done so). Use lots of grease in
the box. Good luck.
