Don,
A good budget swap is the Saginaw 4-speed. The Saginaw came in 60's and
'70's Vegas, Monzas, and some Chevelles and Camaros. It can be recognized in
a junkyard by the fact that it has a cast iron case and side cover, and all
3 shift levers are on the side cover. There were diffferent ratios. Probably
the best for an old truck is the 3.11 first gear. This one has 2 bands or
grooves machined around the input shaft splines. It is a pretty sturdy box,
but after 30 - 40 years may need synchros at about $25 each.
The Saginaw shifter is mounted way back on the tailshaft so is not really
suitable for truck use. Patrick's sells a Hurst shifter kit which moves it
up to the original center floor location. I think it's about $200. The
tranny itself can be had for anywhere from $50 to $150 depending on your
location and whether the seller thinks it's a "Classic" part.
