#2 first, yes the brake system is a "closed" system. The fluid
doesn't "go" anywhere. If you have to "pump-up" the system then you probably
have a leak (your wheel cylinders) and you probably have to refill the
system often.
#1 ...... this is a tough one. (the following is for GM rears)
The first check is the drum itself. Check for part numbers stamped into the
bolt face, most latter model GM's have size and a part number, If it's there
then have your parts house look up the # and they can identify what it goes
on (it probably will have multiple applications). Next check the rear cover,
count the bolts around the cover is it 10 or 12? Note the pattern (shape of
the cover and layout of the bolts) with this sketch and bolt count the guys
at the parts house should be able to identify it.
F*rd rears generally do not have a rear cover, the front of the "pumpkin"
(center of the rear) bolts on, this is the gear carrier. I don't have any
experience identifying f*rds from that down. They do have 9" and 8" and
different spline (axle) counts.
My first guess would be the rear came from the truck the 292 came from(if
that's what came in the truck when you got it.)
If you get the info I described in the text I see if I can identify the rear

Everytime I get into my truck I have to pump up the brakes. The
master cylinder has been rebuild, there is a leak on the back tire. I
am going to get a rebuild kit this week for it. I have two questions.
1. The rear end was in it when I got it. I don't know what it is, but I
know it is not stock. Any suggestions on how to tell.
2. Should this fix that problem with pumping brakes or is it
something I am always going to have to do?
