I have about the same idea, I'am not trying for an exact original look so
I thought I would have the sides bent at a sheet metal fabrication shop, and
weld CRW (cold-rolled-welded) tube of the correct diameter to the top
edge. Check at the fab shop for the tubing, they should have a source.
I will remove the stake pockets, (just not cut them in) and prehaps
cap the tube ends, I've seen this on a few "rods"and it looks good. I intend
to MIG weld the tubes on. (using a small 110V MIG) I'll clamp
and tack weld every 6-8 inches along the entire length, then use short
welds of 1' or so to fill in between the tacks. Move around so the heat doesn't
build up in one spot, and the sheet metal should not warp. I've used this
technique on other projects and it worked fine. It sounds like a lot of work,
but at the prices they get for new sides, I think I'll go this way.
