Hey, it looks like we're both right...the gage will show how much gas
you have, but it'll burn out quickly.

So, take his advice, and stick to 6 volts with your 6 volt gage.  Or, if
you are electronically inclined, add a voltage regulator (7806
integrated circuit) to drop the voltage.  A dropping resistor would work
instead, if you can figure out just how much resistance it needs to have
to give the gage the 6 or 7 volts it wants.
