Mike--
That tranny may be a SuperTurbine 300, which is a 2 speed, based on the
Powerglide design, but in a case that looks more like a TH 350. Are
there 4 bolts holding on the tailhousing? Does it have a vacuum
modulator sticking out the back? Is there a round stamped cover with 3
bolts holding it on, on the drivers side towards the rear? If all these
are true, then it's probably a ST300. This tranny was never used by
Chevy that I know of, although since Pontiac used some Chevy straight 6
engines during the mid 60s, it could have a Chevy bolt pattern on the
front. The tranny was used in Buick, Olds, and Pontiac midsize cars
from 64-69, and is pretty well obsolete. Some of them, mostly 64-67,
had a two speed torque converter, known as "switch pitch", which can
give you a couple hundred more rpm stall speed when activated. The
internals are different from a powerglide, because it uses a clutch pack
for reverse instead of a band, and it has the fine spline input shaft,
so it uses the same torque converter as a TH350 or 400, while the
Powerglide uses a coarse spline converter.
You might want to consider getting a TH350 instead...having the extra
gear is nice, as is having a tranny that any shop can rebuild.
