I have a '53 3100 with stock steering box and a Chevy small block. I have
rams horn manifolds. On the driver's side, the flange was cut off and an
extension pipe welded in to move the flange down about 6 inches (otherwise
the flange would hit on the steering box. I have probably 1/4" between the
steering box and exhaust manifold.
I have had no problems with the steering yet (other than it is typical,
old, somewhat loose steering). Mine is a daily driver. 18 freeway miles
each day. Don't know how the steering box is affected by the heat, but so
far....so good.

I don't think they are quite 3 inch.......they are close to it though. I
sure like the setup....they don't ring like a tubular header and flow very
well. Makes for a nice tight sounding exhaust note....mine are the old
style, with the accessory mounting holes on the casting on the driver side.
Although the engine is a '69-'70 model 350, and runs pretty decent
horsepower, it looks just like an older 283 or 327 with the accessory mount
on the manifold and none on the heads. I really like it.

I didn't have a problem with the heat and I ran mine like that for 16 yrs.
The leak mine developed was solved with a new bronze bushing and seal for
the column.
