Rod; these boxes have two main adustments, one is for "end-play"
and another for sector gear clearance. The large locknut and end-cap
you removed to dissassemble has to be addressed first. It sets the
shaft and bearing tightness. The second adj. is on side w/locknut,
much smaller and in the box cover which you had to remove again
while diss.......unit. The 48-51 Shop Manual has instructions for
rebuilding, but I found spring scale they use as "weird" and use
"feel" to set clearances. Usually can't get all slop out as gears
wear in center position the most and will be too tight as you
turn wheel. Have to find Happy Medium. Do yourself a favor and
put in new seals on pitman side. Small trucks can still get kits for
original felt seal, I had to machine mine to fit a newer type seal
as it was a 2-ton and bigger. Get the manual if you don't hane one,
it has lots of other info for rebuilding all Chevy truck sizes.
