I can help out a bit here, my preference is a MIG, using gas and .023 wire,
although I now use .030 in mine to eliminate changing rolls, it's agood
compromise up to 1/4inch (when veed a bit) material. I don't run beads on
panels with it (never did with .023 anyway) but keep "spotting" the seam
until it's filled completely.
As far as the Auto-Darkening helmets go, I don't know how I (and my Dad for
that matter) lived without them for so long. Personally I bout a Huntsman
insert and a Hunstman helmet, both totaled out to around $160.00. Switching
is 1/2500 if I recall, has adjustable shade from 9-12, and defaults to a #5
if you fire it off without turning it on.
My Dad bout a simalar setup with a larger viewing lens, also the lens has
another nice feature beside being larger, that you can adjust the light to
dark sensitivty and the delay from dark to light. He spent about $180-$185
and if I had to do it again, I'd go with the extra few features and the
larger viewing lens.
Also regarding your welder, it may be able to be adapted to MIG, depending
on the model type.
