I have a mig welder and was wondering > if it was OK to practice without the shielding gas. I have the .30 solid > core wire in it. > Ed, you could, but you'd probably get a lot of holes (porosity) in the weld and it'd look so bad that you might think you weren't using proper technique. Not sure how much the gas, etc. is in your area, but I got a regulator for about $25 and it costs me about $17 to fill the small gas bottle.
