Setting up a ring and pinion is not difficult if you are careful and take
your time. It requires access to a press, some shims, a tube of machinists
high-spot blue and a dial-indicator. It can be done without the
dial-indicator but it's a little more time consumeing without. In any case
the ultimate test is the proper pattern in the bluing painted on the face
of the gear teeth. On heavy trucks the pattern is set up to compensate for
deflection of the gears under load although for cars and half-ton pickups
it's probably not necessary or desirable to compensate. Any good shop
manual will have a section on setting up gear patterns. If you have someone
else do the job I would double check their work before installing.
Gears that are run for any length of time with improper setup will wear
improperly and be noisy even after the pattern is corrected. So you really
only get one chance. When final drives (ring and pinion) get noisy because
of a worn pinion bearing or worn differential carrier bearings the same
holds true. They will wear in the new pattern if not corrected quickly and
will be noisy ever after.
