My 57 had the generator "gauge" (idiot light). Keep the ammeter. It will
come in real handy when you convert to the small block and use a single
wire alternator which has no provision for driving the idiot light.

While I was in Helena,MT for a miniature horse show this weekend I managed
to find a few hours to check a local wrecking yard with lots of ole trucks.
I was looking for a couple of gauges and also the blank GMC insert for my
'59. Thanks to my stupidity I had forgotten what gauge it was that I needed
but knew where in the dash it was located. When I got home and began
comparing the condition of my finds with what I already have I noticed a
big difference. The gauge I have is a "generator" gauge with no needle or a
place for a needle, just a round circle for possibly a light. The gauge I
bought says "amperes" at the bottom and has a needle. I am not sure of the
year of pickup I scavenged this gauge from but it was located in the top
left of the instrument panel, the same as my generator gauge.
1. What exactly is the purpose of the "generator" gauge and is it
something that I would want to replace with this "amperes" gauge since I
plan to run a small block?
2. Did GMC have different gauge clusters for the same year of pickups?
