Listen when you start up after a long rest. You might hear a clatter that
goes away, indicating hydraulic lifters that are pumping up. Next, remove
oil filler cap, and listen to running engine with a piece of heater hose. If
you now hear clatter you have solid lifters, if quiet they are hydraulic and
working properly.
