The tests were staged by Dateline I believe, But am not 100% on that.
The tests were staged by placing a remote control rocket engine inside
the gas tank filler neck and triggered by the staff at time of impact.
They did this because after repeated attempts to recreate the supposedly
dangerous side impact crash; causing an explosion/fire, they failed to
cause even a single rupture of the side gas tank. They were eventually
found out and sued by Gm. I believe the case was settled out of court
and required a public apology, explanation of how it was staged, and a
few million dollars for punishment.
