| My Buick 350 is experiencing some problems and I could use some advice.
Specifically, my concern with the engine started because of a rattle that
occurs as my tranny is shifting gears, and also noticeable when I am
cruising under a nice steady speed and minimal load on the engine. I had a
similar sound in a Jeep engine that was called "piston slap" about 100 miles
before the engine failed completely.
? #1: What exactly is piston slap, and how do you deal with it?
Because of this sound, I decided to check compression. #1 cylinder shows 80
psi. All the rest show 123-132 psi. Obviously, I am losing compression in
that cylinder. I have heard that you should squirt some heavy oil into the
spark plug hole, and then retest.
? #2: If the psi goes up, it indicates bad rings, right?
? #3: Are there any other tests that I can do to try to better define where
the problem rests?
Any additional assistance of suggestions would be appreciated.
