I've had a similar problem, but it involved the gas gauge pegging at full
and staying there while the thruck was running. Turned out that the metal
strap running between the float potentiometer and the top of the sending
unit had corroded away right where it attached to the float pot. So my
suggestion would be to take out your sender unit and have a look at it
before diving into the rat's nest of wiring.
