The head was definitely warped, I eventually sold the truck to a guy who
pulled the 400ci, and dropped a stroked and bored 454ci (I think actual
displacement was like 510ci) into it and went racing (SCORE- Southern
California Off-road Racing ?). The truck was never the same. I just kept
replacing head gaskets because the head had been milled already and I was
too cheap to buy replacements. I have had 3 different 400ci SB engines
over the years and all but one of them was prone to overheating. I think
it's due to the Siamese cylinders that they use. A good high-volume water
pump and monster radiator will usually fix the situation, but then I was a
single, Air Force Airman with more cars than funds to keep them running (I
had 5 at one time and the First-Shirt told me I had to sell or move at
least three of them).
