Smokey got some good advice about some things to check on his mysterious
ammeter/starting difficulties. I would like to suggest another area to
consider. You may have two or more problems, one masking the other. First,
have you tested the wiring to see that all the stuff that should be wired
through the ammeter actually is? You can do this by operating the various
electrical controls and watching the gauge. For example, honk the horn, step
on the brakes, operate the turn signals and so on. The ammeter should show a
discharge for each operation. On most automotive circuits, everything save the
starting current should be routed through the ammeter. Should the needle not
show an appropriate discharge somebody may have fooled with the wiring.
The starting problem may well be a separate unrelated matter. Multiple
troubles are pretty common with older vehicles.
