I have done this swap on two vehicles without power steering. I did notice
a slight increase on one (65 IHC Scout), but the other (68 F$%d Mu$*an%) I
thought it decreased the steering effort. The Scout actually got larger
radials than the bias ply tires that were on it, and the size of the
contact patch could have been the difference. The Mu$8an% got the closest
metric equivalent that I could find and were roughly the same size as the
old tires. A radial tire will generally have a larger contact patch even
if the tires are dimensionally similar. A radial normally has a bit more
flexibility in the tread, and "slouches" a little more, to give the tire
more effective surface area. The change may not be "original", but if I can
avoid it, I will never run bias ply tires on anything again.
