AAA will only do basic DMV work. What you are doing needs to be done at a real
DMV.

You can only register a car in California with the "period" license plate if
you can provide a document showing that the car was originally registered
*when new* with that license plate. This is usually the original registration
or the original "pink slip" title that shows that same license plate number.
If you don't have any paperwork, as far as I have ever been able to determine,
you can't register your car with period plates. You must be issued new plates.
I've been round and round this tree several times.

There are, however, freelance shops that do DMV registration and title work
for autos. They're not too hard to find. They charge for their services above
and beyond what CA DMV charges but if you need guidance through an unusual
situation, it may be worth the cost. For example, in Petaluma where I live,
there is an office near the DMV that does independent title and registration
services for CA DMV applications. There are other, state-wide services as
well, several of them have on-line access.

Because of state finances, the DMV offices are closed several Fridays each
month. That results in long waits and staff that can't spend a lot of time
with you at the counter. Good luck.
