I finally got a chance to look at the car today and it turns out that
the pump is OK (I think). I got no voltage reading at the pump and
noticed that the gas gauge was wrong. Checking the generator (dynamo), I
found that the connector for the field connection was moving around so I
suspect it was intermittantly open or shorting. I moved it around,
jammed it and was able to get the pump clicking and the car running but
I'll need to remove the dynamo and take it apart to see if it can be
fixed. I had a similar problem with the starter in the past where the
plastic surround of the power connector was broken allowing intermittant
shorting to the case and preventing the starter from working.
I always call the fuel pump a Lucas pump but it is an SU. The generator
IS a Lucas ;-) I think I bought it at SR Auto parts a few years back.
Since so many Brit cars used the same one, it was still stocked and that
may still be the case should it prove to be unrepairable.
The weather looks like it will be miserable for a while so plenty of
time to get repairs done ;-)
