Hi Charlie,

My recent rebuild would have cost me about $7-9k had a shop done the
work. Your big Jag motor could run that much as well if you want it
really sorted. On the other hand, it might only need rings, a bore hone,
some valve work, and off you go. If it needs a clutch disk, you should
also change the clutch pressure plate. At the same time, you must have
the flywheel surfaced. New bolts should be used, as well as a new pilot
bushing/bearing installed.

You know how it goes - each job can lead to another because no one ever
really knows what needs to be done with a motor until it is stripped
down. In my experience, if a mechanic gives you a fixed price or a
narrow price range, they will only be able to stick to that if they
don't take care of problems they find while it's apart but which they
didn't anticipate in the cost. They can certainly work to a budget
however; many will source used parts from their own stock if they will
work, or they will minimize the machine work, new parts, etc. with the
customer's understanding that they aren't getting the Full Monty.

Nevertheless, you should be prepared for a somewhat hefty sum - there
aren't THAT many qualified Jag mechanics (though probably more than
Lotus mechanics), so it will pay to shop around. Figure on a few thou.
to be sure.

Cheers,
Greg Tatarian
