Dear Listers: I just had a thoroughly annoying experience today attempting to
ship some wheel rims from Sunnyvale California to a fellow lister in Texas. I
boxed the four wheel rims in what I thought was an appropriate box and took it
to my nearest UPS station. The package was refused because it weighed a few
pounds more than the rating printed on the cardboard box. I then put the rims
into two very sturdy boxes, taped them closed and went back to UPS to ship the
rims. I was refused again because the recycled boxes had a "hazardous
materials" message printed on the cardboard. The boxes had previously held
bottles of Methanol, a moderately flammable liquid. I offered to obliterate
the warning messages with a felt pen but was told that would not be allowed,
that they would still be considered hazmat. In any case I wasted over two
hours of time attempting to ship perfectly non hazardous wheel rims. Does
anyone have a suggestion what the most economical way to send 64 pounds of
wheel rims from California to a Morris owner in Texas? Bill Langdell,
