John,
Before you spend one dime on new stuff for your cooling system check the
operating parameters like ignition timing, coolant flow, fuel flow. Remember
that the 4/4 used to work OK sometime before.
When you were fooling with the engine did you change the ignition timing? A
mis-timed engine will overheat.
When you fill the radiator and then pull off the bottom hose does the water
come cascading out in a rush? A radiator with clogged tubes will spit,
sputter, and drip for a while.
Your float bowl needle is probably sticking in the closed position. Your
engine may be running so lean that it's running too hot for that reason. In
any event ther'e something seriously wrong with the fuel delivery system.
The 4/4 ran correctly at some point in time, you should be able to get it
running right again. Wear time and grime cause most of the problems.
