If this is the typical, early electronic Smiths tach, you are missing a
couple of important pieces. The ignition primary wire should make a loop
through a small plastic block. This block is held to the tach in the oblong
hole by a metal strip and the thumbscrew. Without the plastic block and
metal strip, the tach is useless.
