I see messages about Joe on this email thing for Morgans. I don't get on
this list much anymore, and have been procrastinating since the 11th,
knowing what I'd find. Mike Virr called and told me about Joe's death on
that plane. I had just met Joe at Lime Rock at the Labor Day race weekend.
He came by to say hello: I hadn't met him before but he impressed me as a
tremendous guy. In my business we've lost a lot of traders and other people
because of the WTC attack and losing a Joe DeLuca added to the pain. I've
moved on by holding a wedding for my daughter on this past Saturday. I asked
the assembled group the night before at the rehearsal dinner to join us in
singing the Star Spangled Banner in honor of the people like Joe, and asked
them then to move on with us and celebrate the wedding of these two young
people with joy in their hearts. The result was lots of tears shed for
people like Joe and for our country, but there were also tears of happiness
for these two young people who were going forward with their lives. Soon
I'll pick up my wrenches again and get the Morgan ready for the October
races at Lime Rock, but I'll think of Joe when I return to that beautiful
corner of Connecticut and try to drive a perfect lap in his memory.
The best to all of you, and any who come by on October 19-20 to see the
VSCCA races should come by and say hello to Mike Virr (who's usually there
as well) and me.
