I guess my question was more one of relevance. The discussion had
gravitated towards seatbelts in general, I thought.
I agree with your being bothered by the efforts of the constabulary.
However, checking for seat belt use is much easier than catching (and
convicting) drivers who don't have a clue when it comes to driving.
Driving home from Winnipeg around Christmas recently, we ran into a roadside
check by the RCMP (Royal Canadian Mounted Police) around 11:00 PM. It was
at least -20 C (just below zero for you Fahrenheit aficionados) with a stiff
breeze blowing from the North. The roadside check was to look for drivers
who had been drinking. I don't drink if I have to drive somewhere, and I
felt somewhat more secure that at least some effort is being expended to
keep drunk divers off the road. I'm sure the RCMP officers would preferred
to have been at home (or in a doughnut shop?)
As for driving with our headlights on, about ten years ago, this became
mandatory for new cars. I understand that this idea came out of Sweden. It
makes sense up here because our days are much shorter than yours in the
winter and helps visibility. It's especially helpful when there is a car
coming towards you and decides to pass a string of cars. I don't have any
data on hand but, supposedly, daytime running lights have led to a decrease
in road accidents. I drive pre-1990 cars but have the headlights on anyway.
An argument can be made that we will start to stop looking for cars without
lights during the day and that, once we all have daytime running lights,
we'll be back on square one.

I really had no point. It was really just a question . I've seen lots of
Morgans which have been in crashes .For a car that was not designed with
crash tests in mind, they have all appeared to have folded up very nicely
with the passenger compartment left intact.
It then occurred to me that I had never heard of anyone who died in a Morgan
crash.
I wear my belt but am bothered more by the efforts of the police enforcing
seaatbelt laws and over looking people on the road who have no idea how to
drive.
I will say the best roads and best drivers I have run across are in Canada
, but I still don't understand why you drive with your lights on during
the day .
