Dear listers.
IMHO all should have the Morgan he/she wants. If you have a stable full of
them, with a modern one among them, it's easy to look down on anyone who tries
to alter the specs. But if you, like myself, have an older car (read; older
cars) and use them as everyday transportation, it can't be wrong to try to them
as good, roadworthy and safe as possible, using nonoriginal equipment.
On the other hand, I try to have the car looking as original as possible, and I
also use bolt-on's wherever possible.
With this in mind, I am now having my early +8 converted from Moss-box to
Volvo-box. In addition I'll have a Laycock overdrive as well ( let's me cruise
in 60 with much less than 3.000 RPM, having the old 3,58 :1 diff). I'll have to
change the bellhousing also to make it a bolt on job. The gearbox, which I have
already installed in my -62 +4 4-str, has been installed in quite a few cars
here in Norway, by Trond Braathen ( a Morgan-certified mechanic). Ar least 2 of
these cars have won races and hillclimbs in Denmark.
The box comes from the Amason/duet/144 (and darn if I can remember the
numeber.) and is quite easily obtained from junkyards here in Scandinavia (
with overdrive it's a bit more scarce). Some small mods must be done, but not
much. This is originally an english box, and I'm sure would have been used by
the factory if they had known about it ( and could get it cheaply enough...)
If you need more info, let me know and I'll try to dig up some more details.
Happy Morganering and Happy New Year
