Lorne,
Spen King, father of the Range Rover and the Land Rover iteration of the
Rover V-8
is a director of J.E. Engineering. J.E. did quite a bit of work for Land
Rover on the
3.9, and later the 4.2 (which is somewhat flawed), but built the 1989 4.5
engines
for the three Paris-Dakar Range Rovers with, it is claimed, 400 BHP! All
three not
only finished, but placed very, very well. Why even consider anyone else?!
( A certain
famous American motorcyclist, Malcolm Smith, managed a third overall.)
The NAS Range Rover got the 3.9 in 1989 with, I believe, 9.15:1. All our NAS
engines since 1990 have been 9.35:1 although the first year was a little bumpy
in that we went through 3 chips before Land Rover got the programing right for
consistent running AND cold starting on 92 RON fuel in sub-zero conditions.
Somehow I knew you would need more power but you may need to start with
heat-treating everything and buy some tire company stock while you're at it.
As for myself, around 195 BHP will suffice for the moment (in my state of tune
and running on 100 RON Racing Fuel, which is one of the few advantages
of having knock sensors, on-board diagnostics. coil packs, etc., etc.).
