Is the normal routing slung under the frame when it gets back that far?

The routing you describe is the way my '71 +8 was when it came from the
factory. When one of the rubber mounts came unglued, the hot pipe shifted
towards the tire about 2 mm, and destroyed the tire. I now have shortened the
tail-pipe, and have it exiting sideways just in front of the rear tire, under
the "running board", and elimintated the rubber mounts and had the exhaust
systen welded to the frame. Much more reliable. also added little chrome tips
to the tail pipes.
